October Sky is a novel written by Homer Hickam. It is about boys from a small town who take an interest in rockets after seeing and hearing about Sputnik, the first artificial Earth satellite launched by the Soviet Union. Throughout the novel they build many rockets, successful and unsuccessful, and surprise the town of Coalwood with their creations. The BCMA boys have many difficulties along the way, but they overcome them and end up winning the National Science Fair. All the boys end up getting out of their dying hometown, Coalwood, and go to college, eventually starting their careers. Sonny, Quentin, Billy and Sherman became engineers. Roy Lee became a banker and O'Dell went into insurance and farming.
I enjoyed this book and would give it 4.5 stars out of 5 because it inspired me to never give up because they thought of giving up but they didn't and later became successful rocket engineers for NASA.
You can use the sub tabs to learn about how my October Sky relates to my topic, The Cold War, and how the novel compares and contrasts to the movie.
